Consumer Alert: As Utility Costs Go Up, Thousands of Pennsylvanians Can Cut Their Bill

HARRISBURG – Today, Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Acting Consumer Advocate Patrick Cicero urged Pennsylvanians struggling to pay their utility bills to use available programs that can provide relief. Acting AG Henry Secures $400,000 Settlement with DNA Diagnostics Center After Data Breach Exposed Pennsylvanians’ Personal Info

HARRISBURG – Acting Attorney General Michelle A. Henry today announced a settlement with DNA Diagnostics Center – one of the world’s largest private DNA-testing companies offering diagnostic and genetic testing to help answer relationship, fertility, and health questions – after a data breach exposed the social security numbers of 12,663 Pennsylvanians who were subject to genetic testing between 2004 and 2012. The investigation, conducted by the Pennsylvania and Ohio Offices of Attorney General, revealed that DNA Diagnostics Center failed to properly employ reasonable data security measures in protecting consumers’ sensitive personal information in violation of Pennsylvania’s Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. The DNA-testing company will pay $200,000 each to both the Pennsylvania and Ohio Attorneys General Offices.

AG Shapiro Takes Action to Defend Pennsylvanians from Predatory Personal Lending Company

HARRISBURG, PA – Attorney General Shapiro announced today that he’s leading a multistate lawsuit against Mariner Finance for widespread violations of multiple consumer protection laws. The suit alleges that Mariner Finance charged consumers for hidden add-on products that consumers either didn’t know about or didn’t agree to buy. Consumers left Mariner Finance believing they had entered into an agreement to borrow and repay, over time, a certain amount of money. In reality, because of these hidden add-on products, Mariner added hundreds to thousands of dollars to the total amount a consumer owed. Mariner charged Pennsylvanians $19.5 million for add-ons from 2015 to 2018 and charged another $8 million in interest for these premiums in the same period.

AG Shapiro: Sherwin-Williams Donates 7,500 Masks, Personal Protective Equipment to Philadelphia Hospitals

HARRISBURG― Attorney General Josh Shapiro today partnered with Sherwin-Williams, a national retailer of building materials, to donate N95 masks and protective gloves to Einstein Medical Center and Lankenau Medical Center into Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, and Lankenau Medical Center in Montgomery County, which have 1,852 and 735 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in each county, respectively.

HARRISBURG– Today, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, with a bipartisan coalition of 48 attorneys general, is filing a lawsuit against Facebook Inc., alleging that the company has and continues today to illegally stifle competition to protect its monopoly power. The lawsuit alleges that, over the last decade, the social networking giant illegally acquired competitors in a predatory manner and cut services to smaller firms, changing the media landscape and depriving users and small businesses from the benefits of competition while reducing privacy protections and services along the way — all in an effort to boost its bottom line through increased advertising revenue.
